SHOPPING & F**KING
by Mark Ravenhill (NIDA Parade Theatre June 25 – July 7)
Directed by Alan Chambers
Assistant Directed by Whitney Richards
Produced by Sly Rat Theatre Co.
David Ryan Kinsman
Mark is a recovering addict. For him, rehabilitation means that love and sex are now purely 'transactions'. No connections. For Robbie and Lulu, The sterile corporate world is a kill-or-be-killed existence. Money is the only thing standing between them and their next ready-made-meal-for-one. Gary needs a father. It is the only way he can fulfill his dark sexual fantasy. Brian, a violent drug lord with soft-spot for The Lion King, wants to teach them all a timely lesson on the power of capital and the vicious torture awaiting those that don't 'fit in' with capitalism's great plan.
Shopping & F***king has been making waves ever since its first production in the 90s. Two decades later, its world of blank-faced consumerism, hollow sexual encounters and it's terrifying quest for love and meaning still ring true...
Shopping and F**king comes from the in-yer-face theatre movement that emerged from young British playwrights in the 1990s – theatre that aims to be explosive and shocking.
